Go Ask the Chief
“Go ask the Chief.” If we are honest with ourselves, at some point in our careers, officer or enlisted, we’ve either told someone to do this, or have been directed to do this. While we may not know who the petty officer was that became first “Chief” in the Coast Guard – all qualified petty officers were advanced – we do know that on May 18th, 1920, Congress created the rank of Chief Petty Officer in the Coast Guard.
Chiefs remain a foundational element of the Coast Guard’s leadership. Learn more about the history of Chiefs by going to “ask the Chief” by reading their own history at the Chief Petty Officers Association web site.
